October is a special time dedicated to praying the Rosary. This year, we can give our prayer a more missionary spirit by choosing the “Rosary of Hope,” handcrafted by women from the Pokot community in Kenya.
The Pokot are an ethnic community living in northwestern Kenya. Their lives are modest, and families rely mainly on raising cattle, goats, and camels. Women carry many daily responsibilities, including caring for children, preparing meals, fetching water, collecting firewood, and working in small fields.
During the dry season, when farming is not possible, many women make colourful beaded jewellery. With the support of the Comboni Missionaries, they have also learned to craft rosaries.
Making a single rosary takes around three to four hours of patient, precise work. For these women, however, it is more than just an activity for the dry season. The income they earn helps them buy food, support their households, and pay for their children's education.
Claudina is one of the women whose life has been changed by this work. Making rosaries enabled her to continue her education, and she is now studying at a college. Her mother also makes rosaries, and the income she earns allows her to run a small shop and finance the education of her other children.
The Rosary of Hope with the Dehonian Cross
The rosaries specially made for us are truly unique. Each one is handcrafted by women in Kenya and features a Dehonian cross at the end – a symbol of Christ’s love and sacrifice, through which He gave His life for us. It is also a beautiful reminder of the purpose of this initiative: bringing prayer together with practical help for others.
The rosary is made in the colours of the Missionary Rosary. Each of its five colours represents a different continent: 🔴 red – the Americas, 🟡 yellow – Asia, 🟢 green – Africa, 🔵 blue – Australia and Oceania, ⚪ white – Europe.
In this way, as we pray, we can remember the Church and all those who proclaim the Gospel around the world.
